While you wait
What to do in the first hour, before the crew arrives
Four things you can do safely while the crew is on the way: stop the water at the valve, make the wet rooms safe, lift what you can off the floor, and photograph everything before any cleanup starts. Each one protects the house and the claim.
- Stop the water.
Close the main valve, usually on an outside wall near a hose bib or in the meter box by the street. In a condo, check the water heater or AC closet.
- Make it safe.
Switch off breakers to wet rooms only if you can reach the panel from a dry spot. Stay out of sewage or floodwater.
- Lift what you can.
Move rugs, electronics and papers off the floor and set furniture legs on foil or foam blocks.
- Photograph everything.
Take photos and video before any cleanup, and keep receipts for anything you buy. Your adjuster will ask for both.
